CATEGORIES

Phase 1

  1. Original category
    • in addition to general rules:
    • the tune does not use any notes of the original version of TVMAN.XM (you may not copy&paste anything from the original patterns)
    • the tune does not use any musical motive/idea in the original TVMAN.XM
    • minimum playing time: 2 minutes
    • Tips: an ideal tune in this category would..
      • stun us by its original approach
      • sound nothing like anything from TVMAN.XM, yet suit to it nicely
      • stand out in its masterly techniques
      • be catchy and distinct, even if played repeatedly for a long time
  2. Remix category
    • in addition to general rules:
    • the tune uses musical motives of the original TVMAN.XM
    • you may copy any block of notes from original patterns
    • minimum playing time: 2 minutes
    • Tips: an ideal tune in this category would..
      • humiliate the organizers in technique and execution ;-)
      • remix more original tunes
      • discover the most obvious harmonies between old parts of the module
      • be resourceful, apt, inventive, imaginative, playful, „out of the box“
      • stand out in general
  3. „Level completed“ Jingle category
    • in addition to general rules:
    • only 1 or 2 patterns
    • minimum playing time: 20 seconds
    • suitable for „level completed“ or „making the high score“ kind of mood
    • (if you want to get inspired by existing „level completed“ tunes in the TVMAN.XM, note they begin at pattern order 0E, 1E, 2E, 3E, 4E, ..)
    • Tips: an ideal tune in this category would..
      • perfectly resonate with player's thrill of just completed level
      • sound cheerful and playful, yet not like for small kids
      • not get annoying even after many repeats and minutes elapsed

Phase 2

  1. TVMAN Set category
    • this is a supportive category collected as a streamed music (not tracked)
    • thus, limitations for the tracked music don't apply
    • must „work with“ TVMAN tunes (the original ones or the new ones that came from the competition, or both) and mix at least two of them
    • any effect, tempo change, etc. applied to the source tunes allowed
    • any genre, theme, conception or stylization allowed and welcome
    • allowed formats: MP3, OGG
    • Tips: an ideal tune in this category would..
      • stun us with its original approach
      • prove wrong those who think 8-bit beepy tunes can't be combined with contemporary modern music
      • have high „added value“ over mere collection of selected TVMAN tunes
      • use fascinating tweaks to elevate the original tunes to a new level
      • introduce interesting styles and approaches
      • sound like from an expensive professional studio with perfect mastering
      • appeal to non-chiptuners
